ND2023:AI Day -

We were in-person in Manchester for our conference about AI

Our day was designed to help delegates engage with the latest legislation and Public Policy ideas surrounding AI as well looking at it's societal impact. We wanted them to find out what they needed to know and to bump into a few of their unknown unknowns. We succeeded.

We heard about AI use cases across public sector, healthcare, criminal justice, local authorities, businesses and charities.

Zoe Webster, Director of AI at BT Group shared a video of data from mobile phones around a Wembley concert and insights that data offered when run through AI. We also learnt also about Small Large Language Models and prompt injections.

Professor Helen Margetts from The Alan Turing Institute showed us some of the data from the Turing & Ada Lovelace public attitudes survey. Tom Weeks from Informed Soultions explainde a technoique called consequence scanning and Professor Keeley Crockett from MMU told us about the harms that modelling toolkits do and reminded us about ICO Turing guidance on explainable decisions.

Chat GPT

We discussed thinking of Chat GPT as a search engine and the need to check, check, check what it spits out. We also dound out that all companies need AI policies - look at what happened to Samsung - and that we should not just use AI to use AI - use it as a tool to solve a problem.

Roxanne Heaton and Dr Jonathan Gregory from Macmillan Cancer Support highlighted the importance of engaging with communities building skills and raising people’s confidence and not leaving people behind.

It was an inspiring and challenging day. Thank you to all out speakers and sponsors.
